Three Simple Steps to Improve your Job Description Results
Three Simple Steps to Improve your Job Description ResultsThree Simple Steps to Improve your Job Description ResultsThree Simple Steps to Improve your Job Description Results Customer ServiceCustomers often ask how they can improve their job description results. We recommend a simple three-step process that will help your job postingbe seen in job search results by relevant job seekers. Heres how it works1)Do a job search. Go to Monster.comand search for your job using a job title that candidates who arein your industry would use. For instance, if your job title is Customer Appreciation Specialist, but seekers are likely to search on Customer Service, search on that term.Note Even if you havent posted your job yet, this is a helpful step to see the terms that are showing up in search. 2)Compare the search results with your job title and job description. Do they match? Does the title you searched for match your job title? Be koranvers to optimize the job titleand avoid terms that are i ndecipherable to candidates. Then check the phrases and keywords within the job descriptions listed. Make sure they align with keywords and phrases in your job description. Finally, search for your job description by location. If your listing doesnt show up in your search, its likely that you listed your job in another location.3)Make a note of the needed changes. Then log into your account to make your updates. Remember that job seekers do not search using internal phrases or jargon. By using more common terms, you will successfully sync your job title and description with how real-life seekers are actually looking for your type of position. If you find that your job description needs a lot of adjustments, dont feel bad. The truth is that many people skip this process altogether.By taking a few minutes to complete these steps, you can maximize your job posting for real life search practices and gain additional job seeker exposure.More importantly, after syncing your job posting detail s with real life search practices, your next step will likely be to research interview questions to ask allthe candidates that apply to your jobAll the best with your recruiting and hiring

By that nagging voice in our head, telling us were not good enough?Perhaps the answer to our fears, then, is to stretch the paint. Take out our creative brushes (or whatever tools you use), and dive in.And what about fear, you ask? How do we be brave and recover the essence of who we are? Or who we want to become?Fortunately, there is a way to be brave again. All it requires is one thingLet go of the past. Ignore the voices of those who discourage you. They are mired in their own fear and threatened by the ones who platzset sail.Illustrations by John P. Weiss.Let go of your self-doubt and fear of failure. Risk a little to let your true self emerge. Dont waste time blaming others, even if it was their fault. Find a better path forward. Regroup, and when youre ready, try again.Extraordinary benefits accrue to the tiny minority of people who are able to push just a tiny bit longer.?- ?SethGodinClinging andgraspingWriter Melissa Kirk, in anarticlefor Psychology Today, had this to say about the power of letting goIn my life, the most amazing things that have happened to me have been direct results of me facing the crippling terror of letting go of something. Whether a relationship, a job, or a story about myself and what I am and am not good at, the best things in my life have come when Ive chosen to hold my breath and dive under the terror, even if Ive tried hundreds or times before and failed.Author and mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn, in the following YouTube video narration, encourages us to stop clinging and grasping at things, especially when we cannot have them or theyre not good for us.Kabat-Zinn talks about how they trap monkeys in India. They cut a hole in a coconut, and tie the coconu t to the base of a tree. Then they distributions-mix a banana inside the coconut. The hole is crafted so that when the monkey grasps the banana, the size of his fist prevents the monkey from removing his hand. The monkeys refuse to let go of the banana. They are caught by their own desire.Sound a bit familiar? How many of us cling to a desire? How often do we grasp and hold on to unhealthy habits, relationships or behaviors? As Kabat-Zinn points out, letting go really means letting be. Allowing yourself not to get caught up in something. When we stop grasping and clinging, we let go of the psychological banana. We open the doorway to freedom. Freedom to be who we want to be.A more peacefulstateThe street poet Kevin Devaney inspired me. He reminded me that creative passion is such a gift, if we are willing to be brave, let go of our fear and share our art with the world.Letting go helps us to to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. It allows others to be r esponsible for themselves and for us to take our hands off situations that do not belong to us. This frees us from unnecessary stress.?- ?MelodyBeattieI hope you let go of whatever is holding-gesellschaft you back, and learn to be brave again. 3 things to do when everything appears to go wrong in your life
3 things to do when everything appears to go wrong in your life 3 things to do when everything appears to go wrong in your life First of all, when everything is going wrong in your life, you should keep in mind that emotions are big fat liars. You feel everything is going south, but itâs not true.Adversity is often a stepping stone to success. That is, if you donât give up because the cloud of dark emotions discouraged you completely.A couple of things NOT to do:1. Donât focus on whatâs wrongWhen everything seems to go wrong, you have this unfortunate tendency to focus on whatâs wrong. Donât.When people practice speed driving, they drive their cars where their sight goes. If they stare at the approaching wall, they invariably steer the car toward the wall, even if they know very well they should turn the wheel and the car.Your life goes where your attention goes. If you dwell on whatâs going wrong, you will only get more bad things and events. New Age believers will tell you that you âattractâ negative energy or your quantum vibrations emanate negativity, so positivity has no access to you. They may even be right.I think the explanation is a bit simpler. Your brainâs primary function is one of a search engine. It absorbs millions and millions of sensual impulses every second and its main job is to segregate this ocean of data so your nervous system and conscious mind can make sense of it.Bad things and good things are happening all the time in your life. The focus of your conscious mind determines which data your search engine will fish out from the data ocean. The title says it very aptly: it appears everything goes wrong. Positive impulses will be weeded out from your brainâs query, so the end picture will get darker and darker.2. Donât beat yourselfBlaming yourself for the situation is a default option. Letâs not philosophize why, just assume it as an axiom. In your internal dialog you always assume you are the center of the universe, so if anything goes wrong, it must be your fault, right? You may be even right about this. All in all, most of what you rece ive in life is the result of your thoughts, words and actions. But beating yourself wonât improve the situation one bit. It will make it even worse. If you get yourself into the present situation, guess who can take you out of it? Yes, you. And if you beat up the only person who can get you out of troubles, getting out of troubles is unlikely. It may be wise to examine how your vices and past stupid decisions brought you to the miserable place you are in now. If you can reflect on the past with an inquiring mind and track down your mistakes, you can figure out eventual solutions.Sadly, most of us are incapable of such impersonal detachment and we fall into the default mode: beating ourselves up.If you know you get on that path too easily just donât go there. Itâs a slippery slope and you should attempt a sober reflection only when you are skilled in self-analysis. If your emotions got in the way, donât even try. There are better ways.3. Get your personal philosophy straightI can give you dozens of tips on how to survive tough times, but if you are stuck in a dark place there is no use bombarding you with advice. You need to know deep in your heart that it is still worth trying to get better. You need to be convinced that hard times are only temporary. And in the end YOU need to implement the advice. Knowledge without implementation is as useless as ignorance.I went through periods of depression in my life; some of them were relatively mild, others were downright excruciating. I know what itâs like to be unwilling to raise your finger because nothing makes sense and your soul hurts. You need a driving internal power to get you out there. You need reasons to keep trying. What are your deepest beliefs about hardships? Is it a punishment from God or a trial? Can you see itâs just a passing state of affairs or you feel like youâre closed in the dark room?If you are a Christian, then I encourage you to turn to God. There are never true âwrongâ times in a Christianâs life; everything is under Godâs providence.4. Be with great peopleAn amazing shortcut to fixing your personal philosophy is spending time with people you want to be like. Do you know someone who went through times when everything appeared to be going wrong in their lives? Spend more time with them. Surround yourself with such people.Do a simple mental exercise: reflect on your hardships and think of someone who was in your situation and not only survived but came out of it thriving. Remember the âeverything appearsâ part? The fact is that itâs almost sure there was someone in your situation in the history of humankind who dealt with it.âThat which does not kill us, makes us stronger.âFriedrich NietzscheSomeone broke your heart? Happens all the time.Your close friend or relative died? Death will accompany humanity as long as it exists. Are you terminally ill? That was the fate of millions of people before you.Your child made terrible life choices and ended up suffering like a dog? This is the story of many parents. Were you fired? So were countless folks before you.Find them. Search for stories of people who experienced what you experience and became stronger. Let their stories affect your self-centered thinking. If they did that, you can do it too.The secret of those who survived similar hardships was their attitude. Itâs not what we go through, but what we think about it.Thousands of people got their bodies destroyed and landed in wheelchairs after car accidents and they cracked. Hal Elrod, after an initial shock accepted his situation and was happy that he was alive. Doctors said he would never walk again. Because of his positive attitude he recovered to full health miraculously fast. The Best TipDonât dwell on whatâs wrong. Put your mind on whatâs right. Your brain is a search engine. Give it orders to search for whatâs right. The easiest way to do it? Keep a gratitude journal. Every morning write down three new things you are grateful for. It will unlock your thinking patterns. You will stop focusing on things going south and rewire your brain into positivity. You will notice positive events and influences. You will see new opportunities.Itâs a ver y simple habit to get into. Even if you suffer heavy depression you can write down three bullet points. It doesnât take much time. You donât need special resources or skills to do this. Itâs easy. This article was originally published on Medium.

How to Be the Worst Manager but the Best Boss
How to Be the Worst Manager but the Best Boss How to Be the Worst Manager but the Best Boss How to Be the Worst Manager but the Best Boss K. Williams, author of The 7 Non-Negotiables of Winning: Tying Soft Traits to Hard Results (Wiley, 2013) The worst managers can make the best leaders. And a great leader can become the very best kind of boss. How can this be true? Ill explain. To begin with, consider what a managers role truly is. Their job is essentially to accomplish work through others. Managers instruct, supervise, motivate, evaluate, and mete out rewards and punishments. Some manage from behind by cracking the whip, micromanaging, and shouting orders in the same way cattlemen or shepherds manage: by fear, intimidation, and authority. The first problem in this scenario is the way people come to be managers in the first place. Typically, managers are employees who are promoted because of their expertise in a certain subject matter. They move up in an organization by becoming highly proficient in their original jobs. Unfortunately, despite their skill in their previously held roles, they are generally untrained as managers. Many lack mentors or positive role models to guide them in this much different path. And even when companies provide training, it is generally schooling on the various facets of measuring work production and controlling employee behaviors (I refer to this as managing from behind). Little or no thing is taught about the character traits and values a company stands for, the ones it would seemingly want its managers the face of the company for every employee within it to represent and exude. So what do these individuals do? They become terrible managers because they do the following: Micromanage Take credit for others ideas and projects Create rules for the many that are meant to police and control the behavior of a few Make decisions that support their near-term compensation at the expense of the organizations long-term goals Hire and fire the wrong people for the wrong reasons Rule by force, fear, intimidation, and title None of these approaches achieves anything positive. A team will naturally follow a leader who is willing to lead from the front, instead of drive from behind. We could write many books on bad managerial behavior. In general, however, the result is the work environment we all know too well: fear, mistrust, worries over job security, and feelings of unfairness and ill will and a terrible company culture. What Can and Should Businesses Do? For one thing, they can take a cue from our company, where we have extended the principles of Agile Development into Agile Leadership. Management is simply not a word in the Fishbowl vernacular. We create paired leadership teams that guide and empower employees to do their jobs in the way they see fit. Our Captains work side by side with their teams, rather than directing and controlling them in a traditional sense. They lead from the front and set the pace. They show by example and their people follow. Captains are terrible managers, but they are incredible leaders whose teams produce great results. Here are a few of the traits that can turn a seemingly terrible manager into an incredible boss: 1.Trust your employees to get their jobs done. No micromanaging allowed. 2.Help others get ahead when deserved, even at your own expense. What a novel idea! Dont concern yourself with climbing the corporate ladder. If your people and teams are successful, youll naturally rise, as well. 3.Give credit where it is due. Dont take undeserved credit for others work, however enticing the idea might be. It will not pay off. 4.Set the strategy, but allow others to choose their own tactic. Its amazing how empowering and motivating it can be when individuals get to manage the details of how they achieve a particular strategic goal. They will become unstoppable. 5. Hold fewer (and more focused) meetings. The fewer attendees you have at each meeting, the better. Define exactly what you need to achieve in each meeting, and stick to an agenda when you arrive. 6.Celebrate failure and reward innovation. Encourage team members to try new things, even when you know that they wont always produce perfect results. They will make mistakes which are opportunities to learn and Fail Up. This will result in employees who are brave and excited to work. 7.Be in the people business. If your people know that you have their backs, trust them, and care for their well-being and their families, they will naturally be motivated to work hard for you. How do you find individuals with this terrible-manager potential? Against prevailing wisdom, they may not be proficient (or even familiar) with the teams tasks. But they will be highly capable and teachable in the values your organization stands for. The rest will follow. An anthropology graduate could become a development lead. A licensed attorney could lead a world-class sales organization. A culinary student could become a standout leader in customer support. An electrician could become a top sales executive. A banker could become a top account manager. The possibilities are endless. 5 reasons big money doesnt get people excited about working in Silicon Valley
5 reasons big money doesn't get people excited about working in Silicon Valley 5 reasons big money doesn't get people excited about working in Silicon Valley All that glitters isnât gold in Silicon Valley.Scoring a job at a major company like Apple or Google means membership in the highest tax brackets, so you can afford anything right? Not necessarily.Mid- to senior-level engineers from a handful of companies in San Francisco, including Airbnb, Google and Twitter, fork over between about 42%-54% of their monthly income to live near the office, according to rental listing company Radpad and job-seeking site Anthology. With astronomically high costs of living, even well-paid tech workers can be alarmed by their quality of life. Here are five classic stories of the worst living conditions and housing problems that come along with good jobs in one of the richest metro areas in the world.Using a compost bucket as a bathroomAn Apple employee living in Santa Cruz was taking shelter in a garage in Santa Cruz, according to The Guardian. How did he manage to use a restroom in the garage, you ask?Two words: compost bucket. The same article also h ighlighted the experience of a Silicon Valley techie at a coding bootcamp, who shared a two-bedroom apartment with 12 other engineers through Airbnb.âIt was $1,100 for a f***ing bunk bed and five people in the same room. One guy was living in a closet, paying $1,400 for a âprivate roomâ,â he told The Guardian.Living in a homeless campOne of the worst horror stories weâve seen is a worker whose life spiralled downward after being unable to find housing in San Jose, California, near San Francisco, where the median home price broke a record last year at $1 million, according to the National Association of Realtors. Robert Aguirre used to own a Silicon Valley engineering consulting firm, but after losing his apartment and then his job, his living situation went sharply downwards: he had to live in his car, then move with his sick wife to what has been called âthe nationâs largest homeless encampment,â according to Mother Jones in 2014.Part of the problem, he suggested, is age discrimination against older tech workers.âThe jobs that do remain are very technical and usually they hire people right out of school or while theyâre still in school. Old farts like me donât have a chance of competing. I lost my business and the house I owned. When the economy took a dump it took me with it,â he told the magazine.Aguirre believes tech companies need to think more carefully about how they hire and maintain employees.âI think the tech companies have an obligation to help out; theyâre the ones whoâve outsourced middle-class jobs and driven rents and property values far beyond many peopleâs reach,â he told the publication.âIt sold in 24 hours for $1.7mâNavigating the housing market in Silicon Valley is no joke.Michael, an employee at a networking firm, took home $700,000 last year - thatâs Wall Street-level money - and attempted to cut down on his 22-mile, hours-long commute by looking at a place closer to the office. He was too late to get in on the property market, according to The Guardian. The place was snapped up by hungry house-hunters.âWe went to an open house in Los Gatos that would shorten my commute by eight miles. It was 1,700 sq ft and listed at $1.4m. It sold in 24 hours for $1.7m,â he told The Guardian. He told The Guardian that since heâs tired of the grueling route to work and cost of living, heâs packing his bags for San Diego to take a job for half his previous salary - and a lot less frustration.Bunking in a truckSome have chosen to avoid the unforgiving housing market altogether.A software engineer moved from Massachusetts to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for Google. While interning at the company in 2014, he bunked in Googleâs cheapest housing option: four people sharing two bedrooms at about $65 per night (about $2000 a month), he told the publication. He chose to live in a truck in the companyâs parking lot to save money in 2015, according to Business Insider.âI realiz ed I was paying an exorbitant amount of money for the apartment I was staying in - and I was almost never home,â he says. âItâs really hard to justify throwing that kind of money away. Youâre essentially burning it - youâre not putting equity in anything and youâre not building it up for a future - and that was really hard for me to reconcile,â he said. But Facebook is one company that has given its employees a leg up on the Silicon housing market before.People working in the social media companyâs Silicon Valley office were offered at least $10,000 to find places closer to work, according to Reuters. Generous, but hardly enough: by our count, that would cover only about three monthsâ rent in the Bay Area.

Using Pronouns and Gender-Inclusive Language at Work - The Muse
Using Pronouns and Gender-Inclusive Language at Work - The Muse Using Pronouns and Gender-Inclusive Language at Work Picture this: Youâre gathered around the coffee machine one morning with a group of your co-workers when Joe says, âYou guys missed a great story Robin told while we were manning the conference booth yesterday. No seriously, dude, sheâs so funny.â Sounds normal enough. But read it over again and see if you can spot all the ways Joe mightâve unintentionally made people feel uncomfortable or excluded. He probably didnât mean to insult or distress any of his co-workers, including Robin, who actually uses they/them/their pronouns. But the language he chose- referring to a mixed group as âyou guys,â using the gendered term âmanningâ instead of a neutral one like âstaffing,â and calling someone by the wrong pronouns- may have done exactly that. (For the record, hypothetical Joe uses he/him/his pronouns.) You, like Joe or any other well-intentioned colleague, might inadvertently be using language that makes people around you feel uncomfortable, othered, or even endangered. But by adopting language that is more gender-inclusive, you can ensure that youâre treating all of your co-workers, clients, customers, and any other professional contacts with respect. An integral part of helping employees thrive is creating a space where every individual feels they can bring their full selves to work. Elden Seropian âAn integral part of helping employees thrive is creating a space where every individual feels they can bring their full selves to work,â says Elden Seropian, a software engineer for product at Asana who co-founded the companyâs LGBTQIA+ employee resource group, Team Rainbow. (Full disclosure: Asana is a current client of The Muse.) âEven in supportive environments, many transgender and gender non-conforming individuals can still expect uncomfortable conversations, one of them being around pronouns,â they add (Seropian uses they/them/their pronouns). âSmall tweaks can lead to better communication for everyone- whether youâre transgender or simply someone with a name that could be mistaken for a different gender between different languages, cultures, or generations.â And while you probably know to say things like âsalespersonâ instead of âsalesman,â there are plenty of other ways gendered language can creep into our everyday speech and not only make people uncomfortable, but also unconsciously perpetuate outdated power structures. Itâs true that this probably isnât a topic anyone at your office was discussing a few years ago (or even today, depending on where you work). But itâs worth making the effort. With a little learning and a lot of practice, you have the power to help make your workplace more welcoming for everyone. Here are a few ways to start. Donât Assume When it Comes to Pronouns Itâs a habit thatâs so ingrained, we donât even realize weâre doing it. Most of us are used to looking at someone, categorizing them into âheâ or âsheâ by some unconscious instinct, and then starting to talk about them that way. But a personâs name, their clothing, or any other outward signals donât necessarily tell you how that person identifies. That goes not just for transgender folks, but those of any gender identity. And being misgendered (referred to in a way that assumes a gender other than the one the person identifies as) can be hurtful, not to mention disrespectful. âPerhaps Iâm guessing [a personâs pronoun] correctly, but itâs still just guessing,â says Beck Bailey, Deputy Director of Employee Engagement for HRCâs Workplace Equality Program. âWhen we get it wrong, itâs awkward and alienating for both parties- the person who misgendered someone and the person being misgendered.â When we get it wrong, itâs awkward and alienating for both parties- the person who misgendered someone and the person being misgendered. Beck Bailey It can shut down rather than foster work relationships and rapport building within teams and companies and, if youâre in a customer- or client-facing role, it can even turn away business if âthat person doesnât feel welcome or seen,â Bailey says, who uses he/him/his pronouns. So if youâre referring to someone before you know what pronouns they use, opt for gender-neutral pronouns (like they/them/their) or none at all (for example, by using their name), until you know more. Because, as Bailey says, ânothing is more indicative of respect and basic dignity than talking to someone with the name and form of address they desire.â Think, too, about assumptions you make when someoneâs telling you a story about a person you donât know, says Seropian. Did they mention their friend was a doctor or lawyer or a professional in some other historically male-dominated field and you assumed it was a âheâ? Work on âgetting into practice of using gender-neutral language when a gender hasnât been specified or is not relevant.â Ask About Someoneâs Pronouns Using gender-neutral pronouns or repeating someoneâs name is a useful solution, but itâs only a temporary one. Continuing to avoid the matter might signal that you donât care to take the time to learn about someone and get it right. âUsing the correct pronouns is a matter of common courtesy,â Seropian says. They point out that beyond the fact that using someoneâs name as the only way to refer to them over time âreads as being unwilling to accept a personâs pronouns or make an effort,â it can also result in some pretty awkward sentences. (Think: âI was talking to Elden and Elden said that Elden had a cat.â Itâs not great.) One way to proceed is to ask. By doing so, Seropian says, youâre âdemonstrating that you care about addressing them correctly.â You might want to try: âHey, what are your pronouns?â âWhat pronouns do you use?â âI was just wondering how youâd like me to address you.â âI just want to make sure Iâm using the correct language to refer to you.â Seropian emphasizes that you should avoid any language around preference (such as âwhat pronouns do you prefer?â), because correct pronouns âarenât really a preference, theyâre a requirement.â Unfortunately, the asking approach can be problematic on multiple fronts. âIf you only ask people who âlook trans,â you risk singling them out as not passing or bringing them unwelcome attention,â Seropian explains. But âif you start asking everybody, youâll find some cisgender people [whose gender identity corresponds with their sex assigned at birth] get very offended that you âcanât tell by looking at them,ââ they add. (In explicitly queer spaces, asking broadly is more expected and accepted, âbecause thereâs a general understanding that everyone in the room knows you canât tell by looking and are trying to be respectful.â) Or Better Yet, Share Yours The best solution, then, is to âlead by example and introduce your own [pronouns], then give people space to optionally tell you theirs,â Seropian says. âI would say, âHi, my name is Elden and I use they/them/their pronounsâ... Generally if you lead with your own, people who care about you knowing will respond in kind and you donât need to ask.â There are also ways people can share pronouns outside of face-to-face interactions. For example, Seropian spearheaded an effort to add a pronoun field to profile settings in the Asana app so that any company using the work management platform could allow workers to share their own and learn those of others whoâve chosen to do the same. Generally if you lead with your own, people who care about you knowing will respond in kind and you donât need to ask. Elden Seropian The same could be done by allowing people to add pronouns to an internal company directory, in job applications, and on name tags at events, or through individual efforts by adding pronouns to Slack profiles, email signatures, Twitter bios, or any other profile or communication. By sharing your own pronouns rather than putting the spotlight on someone else, youâre âsending a signal that youâre inclusive,â Bailey says, without singling anyone out. It could help create a safe environment where, over time, colleagues feel more comfortable sharing how they identify and what pronouns they use. Take the Lead, But Be Smart and Sensitive Bailey acknowledges that sharing pronouns is not yet a common corporate practice, explaining that the conversation is driven primarily by younger workers in urban and especially coastal areas, and probably more common in industries such as tech and education than perhaps an area like institutional investing. So while being a proactive ally by sharing your own pronouns might be all the more meaningful in more conservative spaces, your efforts may also carry different risks. As with anything, consider the safety of everyone involved. If youâre in a position of privilege- because youâre in a management role or simply white, straight, cisgender, a man, etc.- it can be a powerful statement if you take it upon yourself to begin making change by adding your pronouns to your email signature, wearing a pronoun pin, introducing yourself with your pronouns, or even just bringing up an article you read or someone you know whoâs come out as transgender or non-binary and informally discussing what youâve learned. It might start just with your team but could lead to a larger conversation, and thatâs what we want. Beck Bailey âThat takes maybe a little bravery,â Bailey says. But âif you have the agency and you want to be a leader, that would be a good way to start,â he adds. âIt might start just with your team but could lead to a larger conversation, and thatâs what we want.â If you have a colleague whoâs not explicitly out but youâre unsure what pronouns they use, you can privately offer your own and ask after theirs. For example, you might say, âI really want to be inclusive of everyone in the workplace, and I want to refer to you respectfully. I use he/him pronouns. What pronouns do you use?â Seropian adds that if you do chat privately with a colleague âyou donât know how to address or suspect others are addressing incorrectly,â donât forget the next step. âIf they do turn out to be TGNC (trans or gender-nonconforming), make sure to get clarity around how they want you to refer to them in front of co-workers, as they may not be out at work.â React Appropriately When someone shares their pronouns with you, some appropriate responses, according to Seropian, include: âThanks for letting me know!â âCool, my pronouns are [they/them, he/him, etc.].â âTo make sure Iâm using those right, is that like âXe is my co-workerâ?â âGreat, Iâll look up how to use those correctly. Mind spelling them for me?â On the flipside, you should avoid doubting a pronoun is real, telling someone â[the] singular they is grammatically incorrect,â saying âIâll try, but Iâm going to mess it up,â or giving up before you even start and telling them youâll just use their name. Beware of Other Gendered Language That may feel like a lot to think about already, but donât forget that pronouns are hardly the only examples of gendered language we use on a regular basis. âThink about boarding an airplane or sitting down to have breakfast at your favorite diner,â Bailey says. âYou often hear, âWelcome aboard, sir!â or âGood morning, ladies!ââ As he points out, these are all meant to be signs of politeness and respect, but they can backfire. If you get them wrong, he explains, youâve not only failed to accomplish what you set out to, but also done some damage. Why not just say âWelcome aboard!â or âGood morning, everyone!â using your tone of voice and body language (like a smile!) to communicate warmth and respect? Seropian recalls seeing something on Asanaâs website about recruiting talented men and women to work for the company. âI know what youâre trying to do here,â they thought, but âmen and women doesnât include me.â To the credit of the people responsible for the language, they responded to Seropianâs email within half an hour and had changed the phrasing on the site. Hereâs an (incomplete) list of common gendered terms and what you can use instead: Instead of âyou guys,â try âyou all,â âyâall,â âfolks,â âfriends,â âeveryone,â âpeopleâ Instead of âdude,â âman,â and âbro,â well, how about just ditch those, no replacement necessary? Instead of âladies and gentlemen,â try âeveryone,â âfolks,â or nothing at all Instead of âmen and women,â try âpeople,â âemployees,â or âworkersâ Instead of âsirâ and âmaâam,â try nothing at all Instead of âman hours,â âman the door,â âmanpower,â etc., try âwork,â âstaff,â or âpeople/person,â as in âwork hours,â âpeople hours,â âstaff the door,â etc. Instead of âmankind,â try âhumankindâ Instead of âfreshman,â try âfirst-year studentâ Instead of âfireman,â âcongressman,â and âwaitress,â try âfirefighter,â âlegislator,â and âserverâ (and the same extends to all sorts of professions) Correct Yourself As dedicated as you may be to using more inclusive language, mistakes are bound to happen once in a while. How you correct yourself is nearly as crucial as what words youâre trying to use in the first place. If youâre having an in-person conversation and realize right away youâve messed up a pronoun, you can easily fix it in the moment, Bailey and Seropian agree. For example, you might be talking and say, âHeâs over there, I mean, theyâre over there,â or, âI was talking to so-and-so and he, sorry she, said such-and-such.â Seropian adds that if you make a mistake on Slack, you can quickly edit your message. And Bailey notes that if you find yourself using âyou guysâ or another gendered term, you can also make a mental note that you donât want to do that again. But if you get a pronoun wrong on an email thread that includes a whole bunch of people, youâll want to carefully consider your next step. Rather than hitting âReply Allâ (which is almost never the right move, whether youâre dealing with pronouns or anything else), you might want to make a quick, private apology to the person you misgendered. For example, you could write or say, âHey, I saw that I misgendered you there. I wonât do that again,â or, âI noticed that I messed up, and Iâm sorry about that.â And you can ask them if theyâd like you to make a more public correction. Whatever they decide, respect their wishes, but regardless, make sure that the next time you refer to that person in the thread, you use the correct pronouns. But Donât Dwell Donât make a small mistake worse by dwelling on it. You might instinctively want to keep talking about how sorry you are, or how hard youâre trying. But as Bailey explains, âwhen you do that youâre asking a person to tell you, âThatâs okay.ââ Youâre ultimately asking them to take on responsibility for educating you and relieving your guilt. Thatâs a big emotional burden for them to bear, on top of the discrimination, harassment, and other obstacles they may already face. And by doing so, youâre ultimately asking them to take on responsibility for educating you and relieving your guilt. Thatâs a big emotional burden for them to bear, on top of the discrimination, harassment, and other obstacles they may already face. The same goes for questions: Remember that no one is actually required to answer your inquiries about being trans or how to be an ally. Instead, put the onus on yourself to do some research. âWe donât need a big scene, we need folks to work on getting it right,â Bailey says. And definitely donât try to explain yourself with a comment about someoneâs deep voice or outfit or whatever. âJust own it and move on. Itâs not about a voice or dress or pants or makeup,â he says. âDonât make it about that. Itâs about how people are telling you how they want to be addressed.â Practice Ditching old habits and training yourself to adopt new behaviors- including using gender-inclusive language- doesnât happen at the drop of a woke hat. You have to work on it. âIt takes practice,â Bailey says, adding, âIâm someone whoâs very aware of this and does this for a living, and I have to really work at not using a gendered reference⦠It is so socialized and so a part of our culture, it does take conscious effort to do it differently.â It is so socialized and so a part of our culture, it does take conscious effort to do it differently. Beck Bailey The good news is that the more you offer up your own pronouns, ask people about theirs, avoid other gendered terms and phrases, and make note of and correct your mistakes, the easier itâll get. Help One Another Learn and Be Accountable Learning about and practicing using gender-inclusive language (and inclusive language more broadly) doesnât have to be a lonely endeavor. Even if no one else at your job is discussing it explicitly yet, chances are youâre not the only one who wants to do better. At Nuna, a healthcare technology company, Bron Lewis facilitated a discussion titled âLanguage Matters: Challenging Bigotry in Everyday Vocabularyâ at the companyâs annual retreat. âIn the mere 20 minutes we had to talk about this topic, the #watch-your-language Slack channel was born,â Lewis wrote in a blog post. The channel was designed to be âa space where we could ask questions and support each other as we try to change the language we use to be more inclusive.â Employees could opt into the channel to help one another learn and find âa safe space where we could admit to messing up and ask questions without judgment.â In another kind of effort, a group of employees at the startup npm made a âGuys jar,â where people could voluntarily put in a dollar when they said âyou guys,â used another gendered term unnecessarily, or misgendered someone. They decided to give the funds to charity whenever theyâd accumulated $50, with their first donation going to Girls Who Code. To circle back to hypothetical Joe, next time heâll try to remember to say, âYou folks missed a great story Robin told while we were staffing the conference booth yesterday. No seriously, yâall, theyâre so funny.â And the better he gets at using gender-inclusive language, the more all of his colleagues will know how much he respects and values them.

Recruiters Best Networking Tips
Recruitersâ Best Networking Tips Recruitersâ Best Networking Tips Six ways to be more memorable at networking events and holiday parties from recruiters who have been on the meet-and-greet circuit.Recently, I attended what was billed as the âlargest networking party of the year.â There were more than 1,600 people at this event in New Jersey, run by the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce.John S. Fitzgerald, chairman of the chamber, spoke about attendeesâ opportunities to make contacts that can lead to new jobs and new customers. This got me thinking about what makes an effective networker.I asked around, and hereâs what top recruiters and hiring managers said:1. Go to the top.According to Savio Chan, an inveterate networker who counts among his friends the CEOs of many of Americaâs top companies, the key to networking is to âconnect to people at the top. Otherwise you get to well- meaning people who are not in a position to really help you.â As the co-founder of Leader Connections, Chan teaches his successful networking techniques to others. While many of us outside the C-suite might wonder why a CEO would want to network with us, Chan has successfully put into practice his belief that we all have something about which we are more knowledgeable than the people with whom we seek to network. That includes CEOs.Top executives will network with you if your expertise can be helpful to them, regardless of your status. Chan advises treating the people with whom you network as peers. With When it comes to the special talents you have to offer them, you are more than their equal. Underpinning his approach is the basic principle practiced by all effective networker s: Networking is about what you give to others rather than what you want to get.2. Prioritize small gatherings. While large networking groups offer the chance to connect with a wide range of individuals, smaller venues, both online and in person, make connecting easier. According to Nancy Ancowitz, business-communication coach and author of the just -released b ook âSelf-Promotion for Introverts,â âSome of the best business relationships Iâve formed over the years got started at small networking groups, special- interest groups at professional organizations, boards of directors Iâve served on, volunteer groups I belonged to, and in other relatively small group settings.âAncowitz points out that these small network settings provide âan opportunity to connect in a more intimate setting with people who may share your interests and you donât get lost in the crowd. Introverts, in particular, often prefer a small group setting. We prefer conversations with one person at a time or in small groups. Small group members who see each other at regular intervals - say, monthly - and get to know each other are more likely to take a personal interest in each otherâs successâMarcia Glatman, an executive recruiter and founder of Coffee and Connection, is putting into practice her preferred method of networking by connecting small grou ps of individuals who come out of the same industry and are at the same level. By facilitating networking within these small groups, she helps the participants âget behind the resumeâ and truly connect with each other. This knowledgeable group of peers then becomes a personal board of advisorsOnline networking is also an option, but be selective. You can make connections on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Some organizations, such as the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners (NJAWBO.org), are launching smaller exclusive networks because these networks can be better vehicles to develop relationships between members. Regardless of the platform, âthe real value of social media comes from the active engagement of the participants.3. Donât find the right party, throw the right party.Career coach Irene Sinteff notes, âThe holiday season tends to draw people together.â She suggests participating in holiday activities in your town and at your place of worship. Attending friendsâ Christmas parties if they are allowed to bring guests is a good way to make networking contacts. Throwing a party and asking everyone you invite to bring a new friend or acquaintance will also allow you to meet new people.4. Choose a wingman.Craig Price of Price Points offers a technique he refers to as âbarnacle networkingâ for individuals who are not really comfortable networking. He advises that you âfind someone you know and like who is great at networking. They will be your cruise ship while you tag along with them like a barnacle.â They will introduce you to new people without the awkwardness of having to introduce yourself. For some people, an introduction raises their comfort factor.5. Cross-promote a friend.Caroline Ceniza-Levine of Six Figure Starts suggests a different type of âtag teamâ at your next networking mixer. She suggests âgoing together but networking separately.â This approach has you looking for people for your friend, not yourself. That way you can âtalk upâ your friend. And your friend does the same for you. âIt is much easier to sell someone else than to sell yourself, she notes and, âat the same time, you get immediate credibility by vouching for each other.â6. Wear something memorable.Joyce Boncal of Advertise You tells her clients to wear something noticeable and memorable when they go to networking events. Perhaps a man could wear a colorful pocket square, or a woman could wear a âstatement pieceâ of jewelry.Whether in a large group or a small one, online or in person, ultimately networking success comes from the relationships you develop. The best definition of good networking I ever heard came from Wendy Vigroux, a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney: âNetworking is not about what you want but about making a human connection.â To that I would add: Networking is about giving because that is how you make that connection. Only after you do so will people want to help you.

6 signs youre being taken advantage of  and what to do
6 signs you're being taken advantage of â" and what to do 6 signs you're being taken advantage of â" and what to do Especially when youâre a natural-born overachiever, going above and beyond at the workplace is second nature to you. Not only because you want to impress your manager but you have high standards for yourself and your performance. While this is a positive trait to have, those who are incredibly self-motivated run the risk of being taken advantage of. Those who arenât as hard working or enthusiastic can prey on you, since they know youâll deliver whatever project, deadline or presentation is put in front of you.Branding and career expert Wendi Weiner challenges those who may feel undervalued to speak up⦠stat! âStanding up for yourself shows empowerment and self-respect. If someone is continuously taking advantage of you, then they arenât showing you the respect that is due and owing. You then become a doormat to the person and their expectation is they can always walk all over you,â she explains. Here, clear signs youâre not being respected:You never feel good enoughAft er weeks of working diligently on a new launch for your company, the big day comes and goes swimmingly. But even though you gave your all and exceeded expectations, your boss fails not only fails to acknowledge your work, but has negative feedback. You probably find yourself scratching your head and wondering what you missed the mark on, which can be bad news for your sense of self-confidence. When you never feel like you live up to expectations, it is more likely that you shrink, instead of rise to the next level of your career. This type of upper leadership attitude illustrates your managerâs perception of you, according to branding expert and career coach Ali Craig. âIt is human nature to crave validation so withholding verbal praise is an easy way to control someone,â she explains. âThe same holds true if your efforts are always being nitpicked. Living in a state of constant criticism increases anxiety and stress responses.âWhen your boss lists out what you did wrong â " or doesnât say anything at all â" take a deep breath and ask for feedback. What specific tasks could you have done better? How can you improve? What did they think â" and why?You are always helping othersSomeone needs help editing an email? Youâre there. Another person needs you to pick up the slack where someone left off? You got it. Though this helpful mentality is appreciated, it is also easy for many to take a people-pleaser for granted.âIt is one thing to help out a co-worker who is in a pinch, but if it becomes a weekly situation, then itâs a red flag that you are being taken advantage of,â Weiner continues. The best way to handle it is to advise that you are buried in time-sensitive projects and canât help right now, she says.Your boss never takes responsibility â" or takes all of itWhen a client meeting bombs- are you left with the burden of the fail? Or when it goes swimmingly- is your name somehow left off of the big company-wide announcement email? When y our manager refuses to take responsibility for the bad stuff but always steps up for the praise, Craig says youâre treading on unhealthy grounds.âIt may seem like a cultural phenomenon, but lack of assuming responsibilities isnât just bad manners, it is also a sign that the relationship isnât valued,â she explains. âThe person taking advantage usually never takes responsibility for anything from their words, actions, and subsequent outcomes, and instead puts all of the responsibilities of the other party.âWhen this happens, pull your boss aside and have a discussion. Though it might be uncomfortable to articulate, coming armed with examples will help make your case, and hopefully, provoke a change. You are doing way more work than youâre paid forNo matter the industry, everyone is short-staffed sometimes - whether because of vacation or a slew of folks jumping ship for new opportunities. Being understanding of the companyâs needs, you might step up and take on extr a work. Though that is a welcomed short-term solution, it isnât one that should be insistent ⦠if youâre not getting a salary bump or title change in exchange. âIf your boss doesnât acknowledge your new additional responsibilities, you are being taken advantage of, and you may want to have a conversation with your boss about how you can be compensated for your extra help,â she advises.Youâre always apologizingTwo words that are far too often in the frequent vocabulary of most professionals (particularly, females)? âIâm sorry.â And 99 percent of the time, you have no reason to apologize- youâre merely showing how antsy or on edge you feel with your manager. As an experiment, keep a record of how many times you slip these words daily. Youâll probably be surprised by the number!âIf you find yourself always apologizing especially if you are doing it just to âkeep the peaceâ â" you arenât being respected. This increases the giving partyâs stress level b ut it also subconsciously increases their commitment to seeing the relationship through,â Craig explains. The solution here? Stop apologizing, unless necessary. Instead, justify or stand firm on your choices and actions, showing your manager or co-worker how tough your backbone actually is.Your ideas are never taken seriouslyYou spend countless hours brainstorming ideas and you take your time to provide thoughtful, thorough suggestions when your manager requests them ⦠but nothing is taken seriously. This can be a big downer on your own opinion of your work and contribution to a team, and as Craig says, a clear indicator that your boss is taking advantage of you.In this extreme, recurring case, it might be in your best interest to seek new employment, where you can recreate a respectful relationship from day one.
