5 Tips For Dealing With An Annoying Co-Worker - Work It Daily
5 Tips For Dealing With An Annoying Co-Worker - Work It Daily GRRRR! Is this person dedicated to make you mad? You know this person, every interaction with them leaves you ticked off and annoyed. They may do things that simply flip your switch or leave you spinning for the rest of the day. An irritating co-worker can do anything from bugging you because they smell bad to saying demeaning things to you. The range of behavior can be vast. How do you deal with someone so they donât completely spoil each day at work? Related: 5 Ways To Build Relationships With Colleagues Here are some tips to help you with this situation: 1. Realize Itâs Not About You While it may seem like the person has a personal issue with you, most of the time a personâs behavior is more about how they feel about him or herself. Try as best you can to not take what they say personally. They may not even be aware of what they are doing or even why they are doing it. They are more interested in their own experience. 2. Avoid Them Youâd be surprised to realize that if you put your mind to it, you can probably cut down on the amount and frequency of your interactions with this person. Even if they parade into your office, be too busy to stop what youâre doing. Ask them to e-mail or leave a note with their request or information. When you reduce your interaction with someone it often improves your interaction with them. You are reducing the impact to you personally when you reduce your contact. Less contact = less opportunity to irritate. 3. Figure Out What Really Irritates You You may not know why they bug you, so itâs best to figure out what specific behavior they do that get you going. I used to have a person descend on me and make all kinds of demands while eating into my day in a very big way. I finally realized she didnât really understand my job versus her job since she was kind of new. Knowing that helped me figure out a plan to curb her impact on me but you canât fix something until you know exactly what youâre fixing. 4. Make An Improvement Plan You may discover that, even with reducing your contact, your interactions are still unproductive. You will need to put together a plan to improve things. You first have to look to yourself at what you can do differently that may help. Can you change how you respond? Can you delay your reaction with a clear head so you can figure out how to respond most effectively? Are you doing something that causes this person to act a certain way to you? You can only control what you do, so itâs best to look to yourself first. Naturally, you may need to engage with them, but you canât control how they will react or if they can even make the changes necessary. Even though you may feel like a victim, there are still actions you can and should make that will help. 5. Engage Them Professionally No matter how they may be acting toward you, you want to maintain a professional approach when dealing directly with someone difficult. This means you donât accuse, blame, or make sweeping assumptions. You and your language should remain focused on behavior, not attitude. You want to be able to articulate what the impact is on you and how that translates into a business problem. You need to be prepared to identify specific examples so they can translate what you say into an instance they can relate to. When you do approach them, make your discussion private to spare any poor reactions from public embarrassment. The path through our career is never that simple or straight. It would be great to think that when we are hired that we do our work, enjoy the people we work with and get promoted. You will run across irritating peers at various times and it will require you to do some thinking and planning to improve your work life. This post was originally published at an earlier date. How to Ace an Interview with a Little Help From a Friend
How to Ace an Interview with a Little Help From a Friend How to Ace an Interview With a Little Help From a FriendWhether its a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen, we all need help from time to time, and friends and family are the perfect resource to reach out to for support and help. However, we often neglect to call upon our loved ones to help us look for a job or for bewerbungsgesprch preparation. Why? It could be that were embarrassed to admit we need help, or we may simply feel its too much of a burden. The reality is friends and family can offer a fresh, honest perspective, and calling upon them could help your job search, bewerbungsgesprch practice and more. One area in which they can be especially helpful, is during bewerbungsgesprch practice. Rather than a mirror with zero opinions or feedback, trust your friends and family to help you in preparing for an einstellungsgesprch before the big day. This can help reduce anxiety, nervousness, errors and wrong answers to intervi ew questions. Next time youre practicing in front of the mirror, pick up the phone and ask your friends to help you learn how to ace an interview.Finding a friend or family member. You may think this is the easy part while, in reality, finding the right friend to help with an interview practice may be harder than it seems. Some friends may be great for parties and fun, but they have no business helping with the interview. Call on that one true friend you know, the one who gives you their honest opinion and is always willing to help out. True friends arent afraid to hurt your feelings with the truth and give blunt opinions.zupflmmel your friends based onExperience. The best help in preparing for an interview comes from friends with management, recruiting, hiring and human resources experience. They have experience selecting candidates and performing interviews.Honesty. Some friends tell you what you want to hear. This isnt acceptable during interview practice. Ask professional friends who arent afraid to speak their mind and give blunt advice.Training. Professionals who have undergraduate or graduate level training are more adept in analyzing your responses and giving educated critiques.Availability. Okay, so youve found a friend who is experienced, honest and well trained. But do they have the time to help you? Dont ask friends who are inundated with projects and deadlines of their own. Remember, they have lives and responsibilities as well. Also stay clear of friends who constantly break appointments or are late for events.Preparing for the mock interview.Treat your mock interview like its the real thing. This is an exercise to make preparing for an interview a breeze. Take it seriously, and ask your friend to do the same. Do your homework and prepare for the meeting by researching the industry and position. If your friend is willing to go above and beyond, ask them to make a list of questions to ask you during your mock interview or provide them ones based on your research if they dont have the time. Provide them with a copy of your resume as well.Unless your friend has extensive experience interviewing candidates, they might consider checking out a few online resources ahead of time. Glassdoor and Monster both offer blogs for job seekers and employers. These articles will help your friend create a more professional setting during the mock interview.Create a list of items for your friend to critique and watch out for, including the questions you had trouble answering, body language that sent the wrong impression and the length of your answers. Choose your top areas first, and ask them to focus on these topics. But tell them to feel free to make notes about areas they notice. Suggest a few questions for them to keep in the back of their mind, likeDid the interview subject greet me by last name? (Mr. or Mrs./Ms. Smith)Were they dressed for the interview? (slacks, dress shirt and tie for men pants suit or dress for women)Did their voice tr emble during any questions? (coughing, swallowing, etc.)Did a question make them nervous or hesitant? (Stuttering, long pause, etc.)Was there any negative body language? (i.e. crossing arms, shifting in chair, covering mouth, etc.)Conducting the mock interview.Treat the mock interview the same as you would an actual meeting with the hiring manager. Be serious during your interview practice and dont laugh at your friends boss voice or treat it like a casual hangout. Dress interview-appropriate (i.e. slacks, dress shirt and tie for men pants suit or dress/skirt for women). Dont show up wearing a T-shirt, sandals or miniskirt to the mock interview. Ask your friend to dress professionally as well to give an authentic feel. It may be helpful to come in and greet the hiring manager with a handshake and a courteous hello. Dont address your friend by their first name, and use the appropriate prefix with their name (i.e. Miss, Mrs., Mr. or Dr.).Practice each section of the interview separate ly. An easy way to divide the practice interview time is by introduction, past work experience and projects, salary requirements, questions for the interviewer and next step questions. Ask your friend to give a quick critique following each section.Making the most of your mock interview. If you want to make the most of your time, record your interview practice. Watching yourself and your body language will help you plan any strategies needed to rectify problem areas. Its for this exact reason that football coaches record each game to help players identify areas of improvement and strengthen positive areas.Mock interviews with friends can help prepare you for those oddball questions interviewers love to throw out. Theres no better way to prep for an interview than by conducting a mock interview with a friend except professional practice. A few practice dates can help prepare for the interview, but professional critiques are gold. Take your recording to your local career center or col lege, and ask the career counselors to provide feedback, help prepare for questions your friends missed and correct less obvious body language issues. The Ins and Outs of Hiring a Consumer Reporting Agency
The Ins and Outs of Hiring a Consumer Reporting AgencyThe Ins and Outs of Hiring a Consumer Reporting AgencyThe Ins and Outs of Hiring a Consumer Reporting Agency Berkowitz, Esq.There are many reasons that employers both large and small may wish to investigate the hintergrunds of job applicants and employees.Identifying job candidates who lie on their resumes or job applications is one reason complying with state or federal laws that require hintergrund checks for certain categories of jobs is another. But conducting accurate and timely background checks can be tricky and time consuming for many businesses.Hiring an outside company known as a consumer reporting agency, or CRA, to perform a background check can help almost any business, no matter its size. A CRA can helpuncover applicants who submit false information when applying for a job.The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) has a number of requirements for employers who wish to use a CRA to conduct background checks on job applicants or current employees. The report a CRA provides to the employer is called a consumer report. If an employer uses a CRA to perform background checks on job applicants or current employees, it mustClearly tell the candidate or employee that the employer is going to conduct a background check. The disclosure must be made on a separate document. It cannot be part of the employment application andThe individual must first sign a document authorizing the background check. If an employer decides to take an adverse action based on the information in the consumer report (such as not hiring an applicant or terminating an employee), the FCRA has other requirements an employer must follow when notifying the individual of its decision. First, prior to taking the adverse action (sometimes referred to as the pre-adverse action), the employer must provide the applicant or employee two noticesA copy of the report obtained from the CRA andA summary of the individuals rights under the FCRA. T his summary is a standard document created by the Federal Trade CommissionAfter giving the applicant or employee these notices, the employer is required to wait for approximately five days before actually taking the adverse action. After the adverse action is taken, the employer must provide a number of other notices to the applicant or employeeNotice of the adverse action takenThe name, address, and toll free telephone number of the CRA that provided the consumer reportA statement that the CRA did not make the decision to take the adverse action and is unable to provide the consumer the specific reasons why the adverse action was takenNotice of the consumers right to obtain a free copy of the consumer report from the CRA within 60 days andNotice of the consumers right to dispute the accuracy or completeness of any information in the consumer report furnished by the CRA.When ordering a background check from a CRA, employers need to be aware of particular laws regarding the use of su ch information. For example, although the FCRA allows the reporting of arrest information going back seven years, some states prohibit employers from considering whether a job applicant has ever been arrested (but not convicted) of a crime. Therefore, employers need to make sure they are familiar with the specific laws of their state before making an employment decision based on the information from a background check.Although instituting a background checking program can be a big step for an employer, the benefits are almost always worth the time and effort. The costs of instituting a good background check process are slight compared to the costs that can be associated with hiring an individual who lies on his or her resume or job application and who later goes on to steal from the company, drive a company car while drunk, engage in workplace violence, or worse. The background check process can help employers reduce or eliminate such risks.None of the information provided herein co nstitutes legal advice on behalf of Monster.

The Pros and Cons of Attending an Aviation University
The Pros and Cons of Attending an Aviation UniversityThe Pros and Cons of Attending an Aviation UniversityA common question asked by prospective pilots is whether or not they should invest a lot of money to obtain an aviation-related degree from a top university flight school, or spend less for flight trainingobtained at a local flight school. Aviation universities are a popular option for people who want to fly and also want a four-year degree. While it might make sense to kill two birds with one stone, a degree in aviation limits you to strictly an aviation-related career. On the other hand, obtaining an MBA while flying at the local airport might be the less expensive and more versatile option. When weighing the pros and cons of attending an aviation university, keep in mind there are many ways to become an airline pilot. Pros of Attending an Aviation University Top-Notch Instruction Aviation universities hire only the fruchtwein qualified professors and instructors. These ins tructors are aviation experts and are usually retired airline pilots, aviation mechanics and acknowledged experts who have made aviation their specialty.Strict Standards Accredited universities have very high standards that they are required to meet or exceed. In addition to the FAAs standards for flight instruction, these schools have to meet their accreditation guidelines.State of the Art Equipment The best airplanes and simulators are used at universities including airplanes that are probably brand new, with the latest onboard technologies, like GPS and ADS-B installed. Planes and simulators are also well maintained with frequent inspections. Like-Minded Peers One of the major benefits to a university flight program is that you are completely immersed in aviation. You will likely have roommates that understand flying and make for good studying partners that you can learn from and collaborate with. Studying for check rides is much easier when you have a batch of people to brainsto rm with.Networking The aviation industry is a relatively small one, and attending an aviation university will help you make contacts in the field. Professors, flight instructors, and peers are immersed in aviation and many following career paths to the airlines. These people can be valuable connections when it comes time to find a job. Internships The coveted airline internship is competitive and difficult to get, but becomes more attainable if youre attending an aviation university. Airline representatives like to scope out aviation universities for intern candidates and usually offer interviews on campus for internships This is an opportunity youd miss if you didnt attend an aviation university.Career sitzordnung Many airlines partner with aviation universities andoffer graduates hiring preference, or at least a guaranteed interview. Some airlines even lower their requirements for pilots coming out of an aviation university because they assume that the student was well trained in advanced flight operations, aerodynamics, air navigation, jet engines, and meteorology Cons of Attending an Aviation University Cost By far, the biggest negative of attending an aviation universityis the steep cost. Tuition can range from $30,000 to $130,000 per year, and this doesnt always include the cost of flying. Aircraft rental and instruction at a school like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University or Purdue University can be too expensive for many people. Many students come out of aviation universities being over $100,000 in debt and will probably fly for a regional airline for less than $27,000 per year.No Back-Up Plan While its a good thing to have goals and want to work toward them, its also a good thing to have a Plan B. Getting a degree in flight will only help you if you ultimately become a pilot. Not only is it a tough industry as far as available positions, but you must consider what happens if you become disqualified or un-hirable at some point. This can happen if you are denied an aviation medical certificate, are charged with a felony or misdemeanor or fail too many check rides. For these reasons, many people recommend spending your time and money on a more versatile degree, like business management, before venturing into aviation. Less Flexible Schedule Universities are getting better at accommodating non-traditional students, but the majority of aviation university students are still required to attend classes in person, during regular business hours. Its not as flexible as flying at your local airport whereyou makeyourown schedule. At a university flight department, your schedule is put together by a scheduling department, and you may incur fees if you cant make it to a flight.Strict Flying Rules The university flight department, and its insurance company, mandate the rules for flying, and they veer toward extremecautious. Instructors and management pilots are meticulous about details, which makes for a safe environment with no room for error. There are standards and procedures for everything, which can take some of the fun out of flying. The decision to attend an aviation university is a big one. Aviation universities can be very beneficial when it comes to learning, networking, and ultimately getting a job as a pilot. But theyre costly, and many people recommend a backup plan in case youre grounded in the future. If you have the financial resources and/or can get a scholarship for a university, it becomes a more viable, and good, option to consider.

Assess for success What you dont know can hurt you
Assess for success What you dont know can hurt youAssess for success What you dont know can hurt youFace it, being assessed can make you feel vulnerable, like youre in one of those attractive hospital gowns waiting for your doctor to give you every diagnostic test possible. Uncomfortable doesnt even begin to describe it.But just like that medical examination, assessments of your strengths and weaknesses as part of the job-search process are good for you. What you dont know can hurt you Youll most likely overestimate your strengths and underestimate your weaknesses - and youll never get a clear picture of what you need to become more successful. No matter where you are in your career now, at some point you are going to be assessed, whether in your current job or the next one. Even at the middle-management level, youll find that employers want to know as much about you as possible your strengths and weaknesses, your leadership style, how well you fit the culture, and so forth. Even if you are bedrngnis formally assessed, you will be asked in the job interview to discuss your strengths and weaknesses. You cant fake these answers - you really need to know yourself. Thats why you need to develop an assessment mindset a genuine eagerness to learn more about yourself as you can continue to learn and grow throughout your career. An assessment is not a math quiz No one is expected to score 100 percent. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. At any level, knowing who you are and what you bring to a position showcases you as being self-aware. Youre willing to be coached and developed, and ready for those stretch assignments that can accelerate your career.Once you get the job, formal and informal assessments can pinpoint what you need to keep you on a growth track. (The most important considerations for taking any job is what youre going to learn and who is going to teach you.) Interestingly, Millennials are more likely than others in the workforce to embrace ongoing feed back. When it comes to formal assessments, though, there can be a natural tendency by people at every level to view them as being intrusive. Yes, youre asked a lot of questions about yourself. But the company is trying to determine your mindset, skills, and experience to determine how well youd fit the job - the stakes are high for employers these days. Companies are under more pressure today than ever to hire as diligently as possible. Increasingly, leading employers know what success looks like and how to measure for it. Yet even the most experienced senior executives dont seem to get this, and in missing the point, they put their entire careers in peril.Putting the Blinders OnJeffrey spent most of his career at one company, rising through the ranks mostly because of seniority. As chief financial officer (CFO), he thought of himself as the heir apparent who would take over when the current CEO retired in a couple of years. Then the companys board of directors beefed up the success ion planning process, with formal assessments to identify employees hidden strengths and uncover blind spots. Assessment results were discussed with people and used to help prepare them for taking on positions with more authority. And, when it came to the CEO role, the board wanted to ensure they identified the best candidates.Every time Jeffrey welches contacted by HR to arrange for his assessment, he resisted. With his blinders securely in place, Jeffrey saw no reason to look beyond what he thought of as obvious the next step after being CFO was to become CEO. Finally, Jeffrey was brought in for a day of assessment exercises. Needless to say, given his attitude, he did not do well. The assessment uncovered some serious blind spots involving his ability to motivate and manage others. When the consultants presented the feedback to Jeffrey, framing it as an opportunity for him to further his development and build his leadership capabilities, he resisted that as well. The board, meanw hile, found Jeffreys assessment to be very informative as some had suspected, he clearly was not ready to become CEO. His negative attitude about being assessed and his unwillingness to address his blind spots only supported their doubts. When the CEO retired, Jeffrey did not get the job. Soon thereafter, he left the company.Knowing ThyselfThe outcome for Jeffrey could have been very different had he embraced the assessment process and used the feedback to inform a development plan. This is the advantage that comes from knowing thyself - and the earlier in your career you adopt this attitude the better. Through assessments, you can engage in development thats tailored to helping you improve. And, when youre up for a senior position one day, youll readily embrace the assessment process as being good for you - and the company thats investing in you.Whether you are formally assessed for your next job or evaluated through ongoing feedback, self-knowledge is a competitive advantage. Ye s, you might squirm under the microscope at first. But the more comfortable you become with looking objectively at yourself, the more confident you will seem. After all, it takes self-knowledge to engage in self-improvement.Gary Burnison is the CEO of Korn Ferry and author of the recently released book, Lose the Resume, Land the Job.
